Wondering if you’re supposed to maintain your website after you launch it?
So you’ve spent some time creating your website, making it look just right, adding content and launching to the world. Maybe it’s been live for a short time or maybe it’s been awhile since you even took a look.
Sometimes it’s easier to ignore the annoyances that are a bit painful. (Except taxes, usually.)
Your WordPress website does need some care and maintenance. Perform these five tasks at least monthly to avoid a hacked or crashed site later.
- WordPress core updates (currently v4.7) will keep your site in a safer place. Updates aren’t just there for new features (although that’s nice), they plug up security vulnerabilities removing the possibility of a breach.
- WordPress plugin updates are important too. Plugins can also open the door for hackers, keep that door shut. Sometimes core updates without plugin updates cause odd behavior in the functionality of the plugin, an update should fix incompatibility issues. Be sure to test plugins and their updates in a development environment before pushing to live, that way you’ll be one step ahead of any untoward trouble.
- Backups are important. In case of any issue, you’ll want to have the option to go back to an earlier version of your site. How often you update your content, is based on personal preference; this might be daily or monthly or some other interval that suits you and your business. A rule of thumb is site activity: the more active the site, the more often you may want to backup. How willing are you to re enter content if a backup isn’t available?
- Perform regular security scans to secure your site proactively, prevent data theft and find malware before it brings your site to a screeching halt. Better safe than sorry.
- Monitor uptime on an ongoing basis which is especially important if your site is your business lifeline, you sell products online for instance. You’ll want to make sure you’re actually live.
